The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has expressed strong reservations about a proposed bill aimed at converting 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Lagos State into full-fledged Local Government Areas (LGAs).
In a statement released on Thursday, NYCN President Isah Abubakar noted that the measure could lead to an uneven distribution of political resources and potentially disrupt the national balance of power.
Abubakar argued that while local government reforms are essential for improved administration, the current proposal appears to benefit only a specific region rather than addressing the broader needs of all Nigerians.
He urged lawmakers and regional leaders to consider a more inclusive approach that takes into account the diverse interests of the federation.
The proposal, which has passed its second reading in the House of Representatives, has sparked a national debate. NYCN calls on northern governors and stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue on the issue, ensuring that any changes to local governance structures are implemented equitably.
The council remains committed to promoting unity, fairness, and balanced development across the country.
