Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have distanced themselves from coalition plans aimed at dislodging the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
The decision emerged from a two-day retreat in Ibadan, Oyo State. Speaking after the meeting, PDP Governors’ Forum Chairman and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, said the party remains open to defectors or new members but is not pursuing any alliance at the moment.
This stance puts a wedge between the party and efforts by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi, who have recently advocated for an opposition merger to challenge the APC. “We’re focused on rebuilding our base and strengthening our structures ahead of 2027,” Mohammed said.
The PDP governors emphasized internal restructuring and nationwide grassroots mobilization instead of external partnerships. Political analysts say the rejection of a merger signals potential fragmentation within the opposition ranks and could affect their chances in 2027 if a united front fails to materialize. The meeting also addressed security, the economy, and party unity.
