Tensions escalated within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday after security operatives sealed off its National Secretariat, forcing the relocation of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting to the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.
The blockade, reportedly ordered “from above,” triggered anger among PDP governors and accusations of political interference.
BoT leaders Senator Adolphus Wabara and Senator Ahmed Makarfi described the act as deliberate sabotage and a threat to Nigeria’s democracy. Despite the disruption, the 80th BoT meeting proceeded behind closed doors.
Makarfi said the party aimed to unify its ranks ahead of the NEC meeting, stressing the importance of cohesion during a leadership crisis.
Wabara decried the public embarrassment, recalling how he refused to alight from his vehicle upon witnessing the commotion. He urged patience and vigilance, calling the interference an affront to democratic values.
“This is not just a PDP issue. It is a test of Nigeria’s democratic integrity,” Wabara warned. The party plans to continue its reconciliation efforts undeterred.
