Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Oba Maduabuchi has described the lawsuit seeking to bar former President Goodluck Jonathan from contesting in 2027 as “a textbook abuse of court process.”
The suit, filed by lawyer Johnmary Jideobi, asks the court to restrain Jonathan from seeking election again. But Maduabuchi said the matter was long settled, insisting that the constitutional clause being cited did not exist when Jonathan first took office.
Legal analysts say such cases are part of Nigeria’s growing trend of “political lawfare” — where courtrooms are used to settle political scores instead of delivering justice.
Critics also accuse the government of silently encouraging such distractions to divert attention from economic hardship and public anger. “We keep chasing old ghosts while the country burns,” one observer said.
Jonathan himself has not declared any interest in 2027, but analysts warn that these endless legal theatrics show how far the system has drifted from real governance.
