The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has warned that Nigeria’s stability hinges on the conduct of free, fair, and transparent elections in 2027.
Speaking through the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), the revered monarch stressed that without credible elections, the very foundation of governance in Nigeria could be undermined.
In a statement marking the end of Ramadan, the Sultan urged political stakeholders to reflect deeply and commit to electoral integrity, noting that a stable nation must first exist before it can be effectively governed.
He also called on Muslims to sustain spiritual discipline beyond Ramadan, including observing the recommended Shawwal fasts and intensifying prayers for national peace and progress.
Beyond Nigeria, the Sultan appealed to global leaders to de-escalate ongoing conflicts, particularly tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, warning that prolonged wars could destabilise economies and disrupt global food systems.
He cautioned that such instability would have severe consequences for fragile nations like Nigeria.
The message underscores growing concerns about both domestic political uncertainty and the wider global security environment ahead of Nigeria’s next general elections.
