Former Sokoto governor, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has backed President Bola Tinubu’s call for state police, describing it as urgent for tackling insecurity ravaging Sokoto and other states.
Speaking on Politics Today, Tambuwal dismissed fears of abuse, stressing that Nigeria’s peculiar challenges demand localized policing.
“When you post an officer from Sokoto to Enugu, he doesn’t know the terrain. We need more boots on the ground and better welfare for security personnel,” he said.
Tambuwal painted a grim picture of Sokoto South, where bandits have forced villagers to flee. He called for simultaneous military offensives across states to prevent terrorists from regrouping.
On 2027, Tambuwal aligned with the anti-Tinubu coalition, saying the movement is not a northern plot but a national consensus.
He warned that Tinubu cannot be defeated unless Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso and others rally behind a single candidate.
He denied ever paying bandits and urged Tinubu to step up support for Sokoto, where, he said, “terrorists are taking over local governments unchecked.”
