All Progressives Congress governorship aspirants in Yobe State have rejected any move to impose a consensus candidate ahead of the party’s primaries.
In a statement, the aspirants said such a move would violate the APC constitution and the Electoral Act. They argued that a transparent primary election is the only legitimate path to picking a candidate for the 2027 governorship race.
The rejection comes amid growing tension within the state chapter of the party, with some leaders pushing for a consensus to avoid a divisive contest.
But the aspirants accused the party leadership of trying to manipulate the process in favour of an anointed candidate.
They called on the National Working Committee to ensure a level playing field. The development highlights the internal wrangling that often plagues the APC ahead of elections.
With the party already facing defections and discontent, the Yobe situation could be a test of its internal democracy.
