A group of protesters stormed the Abuja headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Friday, calling for the reopening of investigations into former Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawalle’s case.
The protesters submitted a letter to the EFCC Chairman, which was received by the Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwujaren, who assured them that the commission would pursue corruption cases to their logical conclusion.
The protest comes after a Federal High Court in Sokoto dismissed Matawalle’s suit over ownership of official vehicles he took away when he left office in May.
The court had ordered the vehicles’ seizure, and police raided Matawalle’s residences in June, recovering over 50 vehicles.
The Zamfara State government had given Matawalle and his deputy five days to return the vehicles, but they failed to comply, leading to the court action.
The government welcomed the court’s decision, vowing to recover all state properties and ensure justice for perpetrators of financial misdeeds.
The EFCC’s assurance to the protesters suggests that the commission may revisit Matawalle’s case, which could lead to further investigations and potential legal action.
