Public Workers Begin Three-Day Strike Over Hardship

The frustration of Nigeria’s public sector workers has finally boiled over. From midnight, federal, state and local government employees across the country downed tools for a three-day warning strike declared by the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council.

The action affects ministries, departments and agencies nationwide, grounding services that ordinary Nigerians depend on daily.

The workers say government has repeatedly ignored their demands, particularly the urgent need for a living wage as inflation eats deeper into salaries.

For the average civil servant, the situation is grim. Many can barely afford transport to work, let alone feed their families, yet promises have piled up without action.

The strike is a warning shot, and unions have hinted that a full-blown shutdown looms if nothing changes. It is a familiar script in Nigeria: government waits until workers are pushed to the wall before pretending to listen.

The coming days will test whether this administration treats its own workforce with the seriousness it deserves.
