Reps Approve $516m Loan as Debt Concerns Deepen

Nigeria’s House of Representatives has approved a $516 million syndicated loan request by Bola Ahmed Tinubu to fund sections of the Sokoto–Badagry Super Highway, a flagship infrastructure project spanning several states.

The facility, arranged through Deutsche Bank AG, will finance key segments of the 1,000-kilometre corridor linking the North-West to the South-West.

While the project is expected to boost connectivity and trade, the approval comes amid rising public concern over Nigeria’s growing debt burden.

Critics argue that continued borrowing—despite earlier reforms like subsidy removal—raises questions about fiscal discipline and transparency.

With debt levels climbing, many Nigerians are yet to see tangible benefits from such large-scale financing decisions, fuelling scepticism about government priorities.
