The House of Representatives, through its Committee on Interior, has announced plans to probe irregularities in the issuance of international passports and the use of resident permits.
During an interactive session with management staff of IRIS Smart Technology and Continental Transfer Technique, Hon. Ganiyu Adele, the committee’s deputy chairman, stated the intention to investigate following petitions and complaints by Nigerians.
Adele, representing the chairman, Hon. Ahmed Abdullahi, emphasized the need to identify any shortcomings or irregularities in the passport and resident permit issuance processes. The aim is to implement necessary reforms to enhance the system’s efficiency.
He stressed the importance of upholding the integrity of immigration procedures to ensure fair and timely treatment for citizens and residents alike.
The committee has requested information from the managing directors of the agencies involved regarding the true agreements, terms of memoranda of understanding (MOU), or contracts signed with the federal government. The goal is to improve services to align with international best practices.
Additionally, the committee will investigate expatriate quotas as part of its statutory mandate. It expressed concerns over the lack of accurate data on the number of expatriates residing in Nigeria.
The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to addressing irregularities and improving transparency and efficiency in immigration processes.
