Chief Magistrate Ejike King George has resigned from the Rivers State Judiciary in protest against the ongoing emergency rule imposed by the federal government.
In a resignation letter dated April 11, 2025, George expressed disapproval of the appointment of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd) as sole administrator following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of emergency and suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy.
Describing the development as a “quasi-military” takeover, the magistrate said it contradicts democratic principles and undermines the legal profession. “This regrettable decision stems from my discomfort with the current governance structure in Rivers,” he stated.
George, who spent 16 of his 22 legal practice years in the state judiciary, said continuing under the present arrangement would imply silent endorsement of unconstitutional governance.
The judiciary, according to him, must remain independent and aligned with democratic ideals. His resignation has sparked discussions on the implications of emergency rule and its effect on the state’s judiciary and democratic framework.
