The Nigerian Senate has clarified why the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will not be included in the proposed state police system, citing the unique administrative structure of Abuja.
According to the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, Yemi Adaramodu, the FCT lacks the necessary constitutional institutions to operate its own police force.
He explained that the FCT is a federal territory and its security is the direct responsibility of the federal government, making it incompatible with the state police arrangement.
The clarification comes amid ongoing debates over the establishment of state police to address Nigeria’s security challenges.
Critics have argued that excluding the FCT could create a security gap, but the Senate maintains that the current arrangement is adequate.
