The Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN) has blamed President Bola Tinubu for the country’s economic crisis, marked by high inflation, poverty, and unemployment. The council’s president, Sheikh AbdurRasheed Hadiyatullah, said Nigerians are suffering from the rising cost of living, as food and other essentials have become unaffordable.
Hadiyatullah spoke at the SCSN’s National Conference in Abuja on Tuesday, on the theme: “Matters Arising from the 2023 Election and Associated Socio-Economic Challenges”.
The World Bank has confirmed Nigeria’s economic plight, reporting that inflation pushed four million people into poverty in the first five months of 2023, and projecting that another 2.8 million people would join them by the end of the year.
The main drivers of inflation in Nigeria are food and non-alcoholic beverages (14.98 per cent), housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuel (4.84 per cent), and transport (1.88 per cent). The removal of fuel subsidy and the foreign exchange rate unification policy have also contributed to the inflation surge.
