Vice President Kashim Shettima has left Abuja for Cotonou to represent President Bola Tinubu at the inauguration of Benin Republic’s President-elect Romuald Wadagni.
The ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Presidential Palace, with several African leaders expected to attend.
Shettima’s delegation includes senior government officials. The visit underscores Nigeria’s diplomatic ties with its western neighbour, particularly on trade and security cooperation. Benin Republic has been a key partner in Nigeria’s fight against smuggling and cross-border crime.
Wadagni, a former finance minister, won the recent election on a platform of economic reform. Nigeria and Benin share a long border and deep cultural links.
The VP’s participation is seen as a gesture of goodwill. However, some critics question the timing, as domestic issues like insecurity and economic hardship demand urgent attention at home.
