At least five people, including two young children, lost their lives in a devastating windstorm that struck Gwadabawa and Kware LGAs of Sokoto State on Tuesday.
The Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the deaths during an on-the-spot assessment of affected communities on Saturday.
According to the report, Gwadabawa LGA recorded the worst damage, with 878 homes destroyed, affecting 1,306 households and displacing over 7,800 people.
In Kware LGA, 523 houses were damaged, with 18 persons injured and major infrastructure, including parts of Government Secondary School Kware, also affected.
The fatalities were reported in Marabawa, where two children aged 18 months and three years were among the victims.
Hard-hit areas like Kofar-Barga and 30-Quarters saw homes completely flattened, with residents left homeless.
SEMA said documentation of affected victims is ongoing and will be forwarded to both state and federal authorities for swift humanitarian intervention.
The agency urged communities to remain calm as government support is being mobilised to address the aftermath of the natural disaster.
