Human rights activist and 2023 AAC presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has regained freedom after three days in detention.
He announced his release via social media late Friday, telling supporters it was “nothing to celebrate” but thanking them for their resilience.
Sowore had been held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja since Wednesday over two petitions — one alleging he published a forged police document, the other accusing him of cyberbullying.
CP Abayomi Shogunle, who heads the Special Intervention Squad, said the activist refused to make a statement despite legal counsel being present, stressing that the police acted within the law. His arrest triggered protests in Abuja, Lagos, Osun, and Oyo.
Sowore recently led a demonstration for improved welfare for retired police officers and criticised the force’s promotion exercise.
While police insist his rights were respected, critics view the detention as politically motivated. His release marks a pause, but not an end, to his standoff with authorities.
