The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, has denounced the hoarding of wealth by public officials, calling for comprehensive measures to combat corruption and promote fairness in the country.
Speaking at the 2024 first quarterly meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) in Abuja, the Sultan lamented that corruption has become entrenched in Nigeria, with many public officials amassing wealth overnight and becoming multi-billionaires upon leaving office.
The Sultan emphasized the need for a study to understand why corruption persists in Nigeria, citing the lack of accountability and oversight as contributing factors.
He urged religious leaders to play a crucial role in combating corruption and cybercrime, stressing that the accumulation of wealth at the expense of fellow human beings is unacceptable.
Other speakers at the event, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, and the Executive Secretary of NIREC, Prof.
Cornelius Afebu Omonokhua, echoed the Sultan’s sentiments, calling for collective action to address corruption and promote national integrity.
