President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi and other prominent Nigerians have sent condolences to heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua following Monday’s fatal crash in Ogun State that claimed two lives.
Authorities confirmed that Joshua, who was seated in the rear of a Lexus SUV, sustained minor injuries and is receiving treatment in Lagos. Two associates travelling with him were pronounced dead at the scene.
Tinubu described the tragedy as a “deep shadow over the season” and later revealed he spoke directly with Joshua and his mother, assuring them of government support and praying for a quick recovery.
Atiku, Obi, former Ogun governor Ibikunle Amosun, the National Sports Commission and the Nigerian Boxing Federation all issued messages wishing Joshua strength and mourning the victims.
The Ogun Police Command and the Federal Road Safety Corps said preliminary findings show the SUV was speeding and overtook wrongfully before crashing into a stationary truck. The deceased have been moved to Livewell Hospital Morgue in Sagamu.
Investigations are ongoing, even as tributes continue to pour in for the victims and the British-Nigerian boxer.
