President Bola Tinubu has pleaded with Nigerian youths to resist the temptation to emigrate, urging them instead to stay and help rebuild the nation.
Speaking during Democracy Day events in Abuja, Tinubu acknowledged the “japa” trend but argued that his government is creating new opportunities through targeted initiatives.
“Do not leave Nigeria. Stay here and be part of our great renewal,” he said. Critics, however, were quick to point out that the president’s appeal rings hollow given the harsh economic realities.
Youth unemployment remains above 40%, the naira continues to lose value, and the cost of essentials keeps rising.
Many young Nigerians see no future at home and view emigration as their only viable option. Tinubu’s message drew mixed reactions on social media, with some calling for concrete policies like jobs and affordable housing instead of emotional speeches.
The president also urged older generations to mentor the youth and foster patriotism.
