President Bola Tinubu has approved another six-month tenure extension for Comptroller General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi, marking what the presidency describes as a final term to conclude ongoing reforms.
The extension, announced Friday by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, takes effect from August 1, 2026. Adeniyi’s previous extension was due to expire on that date.
The decision allows the Customs chief to see through key modernization initiatives and ensure a smooth transition to a successor.
Critics, however, argue that repeated extensions of service chiefs and agency heads undermine institutional stability and due process.
Adeniyi was first appointed in 2023 and has overseen significant revenue collection improvements but also faced controversies over smuggling and staff welfare.
The extension comes amid growing public frustration over economic hardship and rising costs of goods, with Customs operations often blamed for bottlenecks at ports. Many Nigerians question whether the extra time will translate into measurable relief for businesses and citizens.
