Former Northern Elders Forum spokesperson, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has advised President Bola Tinubu to abandon any plan to seek re-election in 2027, arguing that the president has not demonstrated the drive or capacity needed to steer Nigeria out of its worsening crises.
Baba-Ahmed, who resigned in April as Special Adviser to the Vice President, made the remarks during Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.
He said Tinubu, despite achieving his long-sought ambition of becoming president, has fallen short of expectations. According to him, the strategic and energetic Tinubu once known in political circles is “not the leader running the country today.”
Baba-Ahmed urged the president to instead rally support behind a younger, healthier and more focused successor from within the APC. He argued that Tinubu has all the political leverage he needs but has not deployed it toward real governance.
Referencing the president’s perceived slow response to recent national challenges, he said Nigeria has deteriorated to a point where business-as-usual leadership is no longer acceptable. “We cannot continue pretending things are normal,” he said, stressing the need for more competent stewardship.
