President Bola Tinubu, in a meeting with the newly appointed United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Richard Mills Jr., stressed that while protests are a fundamental part of democracy, they must not lead to violence.
Speaking at the Presidential Villa, Tinubu highlighted the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and the US, emphasizing shared democratic values and the importance of peaceful protests.
“Our relationship with America is rich. We believe in democracy and freedom. Protests are a democratic right, but they should not result in the destruction of lives and property,” Tinubu stated.
Ambassador Mills reaffirmed US support for Nigeria’s democracy and pledged to enhance cooperation in areas such as cybercrimes, announcing a special office at the Embassy to collaborate with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
President Tinubu also received Letters of Credence from the High Commissioners of Malaysia and Botswana, discussing opportunities to improve trade and cultural ties.
