President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to restoring the relevance of traditional rulers in Nigeria’s governance structure.
Speaking at an event with monarchs in Abuja, Tinubu described traditional institutions as critical to achieving peace, security, and grassroots development.
He noted that traditional rulers are closer to the people and understand local dynamics better than any government agency.
The President promised to strengthen the role of traditional rulers in conflict resolution and community mobilisation.
He also directed relevant ministries to collaborate with traditional councils on programmes related to public health, education, and agriculture.
Tinubu’s statement is seen as a shift from previous administrations that often sidelined traditional authorities.
Many royal fathers have expressed satisfaction with the renewed recognition. They urged the government to back words with action by granting constitutional roles to traditional rulers.
The Presidency assured that a framework for institutionalising the partnership would be unveiled soon. The meeting was attended by prominent traditional rulers from across the country.
