The United Nations has warned that Israel’s reported airstrikes in Doha, Qatar, could dangerously escalate the Gaza conflict and destabilise the region.
UN political chief Rosemary DiCarlo told the Security Council that the attack—targeting figures reportedly discussing a U.S.-backed Gaza ceasefire and hostage release plan—was “an alarming escalation” that violated Qatar’s sovereignty.
She noted Qatar has played a key mediating role alongside Egypt and the U.S. in pushing for a truce, adding: “We are deeply grateful for Qatar’s steadfast diplomacy. All parties must act to preserve these efforts.”
DiCarlo stressed that disrupting mediation efforts erodes trust and jeopardises the diplomatic channels the world relies on to resolve conflicts. She urged all sides to recommit to dialogue and strike a ceasefire deal.
“The urgency of a ceasefire and hostage release deal in Gaza has never been greater. Strike a deal. Free the hostages. End the suffering,” she said, warning that more violence will only push peace further out of reach.
