Economist and activist Prof. Pat Utomi has boldly dismissed the Department of State Services’ (DSS) court action over his newly launched “Big Tent Coalition Shadow Government,” pledging unflinching commitment to democratic oversight—even at the cost of arrest or death.
The shadow cabinet, unveiled May 5, unites members from multiple opposition parties to critique and propose alternatives on key national issues.
After the DSS accused him of “usurping” executive power and “destabilising” the country, Utomi took to X to deride the charges as a “shadowy business” and lament constitutional breaches by those in power.
He thanked supporters mobilising legal defence teams and reminded Nigerians of past pro‑democracy struggles under Gen. Abacha—when he chaired the St. Leo’s conference on Nigeria’s future.
Drawing parallels with Gandhi, Mandela, and King Jr., Utomi declared himself ready for handcuffs—or even a fatal “bullet at the airport”—“like a lamb led to slaughter.”
He underscored that “death is no big deal” compared to the erosion of citizens’ right to question their leaders. Invoking June 12 and the legacy of MKO Abiola, he vowed to continue “chanting Freedom”—come what may.
