FIFA has green-lit an expansion of the Women’s World Cup from 32 to 48 teams, starting with the 2031 edition, in a landmark move to broaden participation and investment in women’s football.
The decision, reached after extensive consultations, will see the tournament adopt a 12-group stage and extend by one week, increasing matches from 64 to 104.
This expansion follows the competition’s growth from 16 to 24 teams in 2015 and then to 32 in 2023.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino hailed the move as “logical given the women’s game’s unprecedented global growth.”
By enlarging the field, emerging footballing nations will gain more opportunities to compete on the world stage, helping to strengthen domestic leagues and player development.
Hosting requirements will also adapt: candidate countries for 2031 and 2035 must accommodate the larger format, including upgraded stadiums and logistical capacities.
The announcement builds on the record-breaking 2023 tournament in Australia and New Zealand, which set viewership and attendance records, underscoring the Women’s World Cup’s rising commercial and cultural impact.
With this expansion, FIFA aims to further galvanise the women’s game and inspire a new generation of players and fans.
