The Nigeria international collided with the goalpost late in the match and initially attempted to play on before being substituted after treatment on the pitch.
Forest’s club statement on Tuesday confirmed Awoniyi was “recovering well so far following urgent surgery,” but new reports suggest the procedure was life‑saving.
The incident prompted owner Evangelos Marinakis to burst onto the pitch in frustration, questioning manager Nuno Espírito Santo’s decision to delay the substitution.
Awoniyi’s injury casts doubt over his availability for Forest’s crucial final two fixtures against West Ham and Chelsea as they vie for a Champions League qualification spot.
Currently seventh—one point shy of the top five—Forest must now navigate the season’s climax without their top scorer.
