Major tech companies, including Google, Meta, X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, and Microsoft, paid N2.55 trillion in taxes to the Federal Government in the first half of 2024, according to the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).
The agency, in a statement signed by its Head of Public Affairs, Hadiza Umar, attributed the increase in revenue to improved regulatory frameworks and compliance measures.
Data from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) also highlighted the role of interactive digital platforms in boosting government revenue.
NITDA revealed that in 2023, over 12 million Nigerian accounts were deactivated by social media platforms for various offenses, while 65.8 million pieces of content were taken down for policy violations.
Additionally, 4.1 million complaints from Nigerian users were received, with over 379,000 pieces of content reinstated following appeals.
The agency commended platforms like Google, TikTok, and X for adhering to Nigeria’s Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms, emphasizing their role in promoting online safety.
NITDA urged continued collaboration to address emerging challenges and foster a safer digital space.
