The African Union has condemned reported joint military strikes by the United States and Israel on targets inside Iran, describing the development as a dangerous escalation with potential global repercussions.
In a statement, AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf called for urgent de-escalation and adherence to international law, warning that continued hostilities could destabilise global energy markets, worsen food insecurity, and strain fragile economies — particularly in Africa.
He emphasised that sustainable peace can only be achieved through diplomacy, urging all parties to support mediation efforts, including those facilitated by Oman.
The AU warned that intensifying conflict in the Middle East risks widening geopolitical tensions and compounding existing economic pressures across vulnerable regions.
By advocating restraint and dialogue, the continental body signalled concern that prolonged instability could trigger ripple effects far beyond the region, threatening global supply chains and economic resilience.
The statement reinforces Africa’s longstanding diplomatic stance favouring negotiated settlements over military confrontation in international disputes.
