Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has rejected pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump to allow American forces to use Spanish military bases for operations against Iran.
Speaking in a televised address, Sánchez declared that Spain’s position could be summarised in four words: “No to war.”
The Spanish leader said his government would not support military actions that could deepen global instability, even in the face of potential economic retaliation from Washington.
Trump had earlier criticised Spain as an unreliable NATO ally and threatened trade consequences after Madrid refused to grant operational access to its bases.
Sánchez argued that many governments and citizens across Europe and other regions share Spain’s opposition to further military escalation.
The dispute reflects growing international divisions over the expanding conflict involving Iran and the United States, with several governments calling for diplomatic solutions rather than military confrontation.
