Professor Mohamed Yakub Janabi of Tanzania has been nominated as the next Regional Director for the World Health Organization (WHO) African Region.
The nomination occurred during a Special Session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa in Geneva, convened after the passing of the previous Director-elect.
Proposed by Tanzania, Janabi was selected from a field of candidates and his nomination now goes to the WHO Executive Board later this month for confirmation. If approved, he will serve a five-year term.
In his acceptance remarks, Professor Janabi pledged to prioritize the region’s health needs through resilience, unity, and innovation, expressing gratitude for the trust placed in him.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus congratulated Janabi, acknowledging his experience and the critical time at which he assumes leadership.
Dr. Tedros also thanked the Acting Regional Director, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, for his stewardship during the transition.
Dr. Ihekweazu also offered his support to Professor Janabi, recognizing the significant health challenges and progress in the region. Janabi’s expected confirmation marks a new chapter for health leadership in Africa.
