In a historic vote, the United Nations General Assembly has passed a non-binding resolution calling for an end to Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories within the next 12 months.
The resolution, which is based on a legal opinion from the International Court of Justice, declares Israel’s occupation of the territories since 1967 as “unlawful.”
Out of 181 member states, 124 voted in favor, 14 opposed, and 43 abstained from the resolution, which urges Israel to comply with international law and end its occupation. Israel, however, warned that the resolution could incite further violence in the region.
Palestinian leaders welcomed the resolution as a step toward justice and self-determination, while Israeli officials criticized the vote, claiming it undermines peace efforts.
The resolution follows decades of conflict between Israel and Palestine, with many international observers calling for a renewed push toward a two-state solution.
