United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on the Taliban to reopen girls’ schools in Afghanistan on the second anniversary of the ban on girls’ education.
Since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021, Afghanistan has been the only country in the world to deny girls and women access to education beyond primary school.
The UN chief and organizations like Amnesty International have condemned this ban as a violation of human rights.
Despite initial promises by the Taliban that the ban was temporary, there has been no progress on reopening schools for girls.
