In response to a series of coups and escalating conflicts in the Sahel, West African leaders will gather for a summit on December 10 in Abuja, Nigeria.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) aims to address the challenges posed by recent coups, including the overthrow of Niger’s elected president in July.
Despite threats of military intervention and economic sanctions, the military regime in Niger remains firm, proposing a potentially lengthy transition to civilian rule.
ECOWAS, led by Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, continues diplomatic efforts while emphasizing the need for a swifter resolution than the proposed three-year transition.
The summit excludes suspended member countries that experienced coups, including Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Guinea. Additionally, a failed coup attempt occurred in Sierra Leone, further heightening concerns in the region.
