Nigeria’s House of Representatives has rejected claims of Christian genocide by U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, calling them a “misleading distortion” of the country’s security reality.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu led the motion condemning the U.S. Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act (2025), which seeks to label Nigeria a “country of particular concern.” The House insisted that insecurity affects all citizens regardless of faith, driven by banditry, insurgency, and communal conflict, not religious persecution.
Lawmakers urged the Foreign Affairs Ministry to launch a diplomatic protest and engage U.S. legislators to correct the record.
Meanwhile, Minister of Information Mohammed Idris dismissed Cruz’s statistics as fabricated, calling them “absolutely false.”
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) acknowledged Christian suffering but emphasized that all Nigerians deserve protection. CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh urged the government to ensure equal security for every citizen, saying peace depends on fairness and justice.
