The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced early distribution of sensitive and non-sensitive materials for Saturday’s Anambra governorship election.
Materials arrived at the Central Bank of Nigeria, Awka, on Wednesday and were dispatched Thursday under tight security.
Resident Electoral Commissioner Dr. Elizabeth Agwu said the move was to ensure materials reached polling centres before election day, assuring that INEC was “fully prepared for a credible, peaceful exercise.”
Party agents and observers monitored the sorting of BVAS machines and result sheets under security supervision. Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Abayomi Shogunle announced an increase in personnel from 45,000 to 55,000 to guarantee voter safety, with at least three officers per polling unit.
He clarified the reinforcement was for protection, not intimidation. INEC confirmed that 16 candidates from 16 political parties are contesting, including incumbent Governor Charles Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
Dr. Agwu urged residents to “come out and vote,” dismissing fears that results were predetermined. “Your vote will count,” she said.
