The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has hailed President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima for ordering a reduction in 2026 Hajj fares.
Pilgrims were initially billed ₦8.2–₦8.5 million, but the presidency directed NAHCON to review the figures within two days, citing naira appreciation.
The Commission described the directive as proof of “a listening government.”
However, critics argue that slashing pilgrimage costs for a select group while inflation and poverty soar nationwide exposes misplaced priorities.
Public affairs analysts say faith-based populism has long been used to score cheap points while ignoring the economic realities confronting millions.
“It’s easy to subsidize Hajj when public universities are on strike and hospitals are underfunded,” said one observer.
Still, NAHCON promised to work closely with state boards to implement the new directive and urged pilgrims to pay early to benefit from the exchange rate.
For most Nigerians, the gesture is symbolic—cheaper Hajj for the few, costlier living for the rest.
